TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama Rowing team won three of four races today on the Black Warrior River as the Crimson Tide battled Southern Methodist University in the second of three home races this spring.
"Up to this point we have been emphasizing the body of the race," said Alabama head coach Larry Davis. "Now that we have a solid mid-point we are trying to work on the last 300 meters of the race. One of the areas we have not worked a lot on is the last 300 m. That showed a little bit today as we let the SMU Second Varsity slip ahead of us in the second race. We will be emphasizing that in the next few weeks so that we have a complete package as we enter into the championship phase of our season."
Alabama's Novice boat outshined the competition in the Varsity/Novice 4+ race, winning with a time of 8:21.9. The Tide varsity squad finished second with an 8:25.6. The SMU Mustangs took third with a time out 8:35.9, barely outpacing Alabama's second novice squad which finished with an 8:37.2.
In the Second Varsity 8+ the Mustangs had the upper hand, winning with a time of 7:24.1. Alabama was second with a time of 7:27.7. In the First Varsity 8+ race, Alabama earned the fastest time on the water today, winning with a time of 6:58.6. SMU put in a time of 7:03.5 to take second. The Novice 8+ was the last race of the day. The Tide defeated the Mustangs 7:17.9-7:53.8.
"Overall, we have made some good progress over the spring," said Davis. "We have built on what we did in the fall. We had good cooperation out of the weather today and all crews rowed well. We are pleased with the progress but not complacent."
The Tide takes to the Black Warrior River for its final time at home this spring Saturday, April 5 as Alabama host Creighton on senior day.
