RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico ?? The No. 16-ranked Alabama women's golf team started its spring slate in impressive fashion as the Tide are atop the leader board after round one of play Sunday at the Coco Beach Golf Course. Alabama shot a first round 293 (+5) to be tied with TCU after the first day of play.
"I thought we were playing pretty well going into the tournament," head coach Mic Potter said. "I think they were fairly comfortable after going through the qualifying with relatively the same windy conditions. We just need to keep taking care of one shot at a time. If we do that, we will be fine."
Alabama had four members score in the top 20 out of the 93-golfer field on day one. Junior transfer Kathleen Ekey led the charge for the Tide with a first round score of even-par 72 to sit in a tie for seventh on the 6168-yard Coco Beach Golf Course.
Sophomore Rhea Nair followed with a score of 1-over-par 73 to come out of the gate in a tie for 11th place. Nair was the Tide's top finisher at the event with a 26th place finish a year ago.
Freshman Camilla Lennarth and sophomore Helena Blomberg are tied for 17th after shooting a 2-over-74. Senior Sarah Sturm rounded out the Tide golfers with a 4-over-76 to be in a tie for 38th after round one.
Ekey tallied four birdies on the day to sit four strokes behind the leader Stacy Lewis of Arkansas. Nair and Blomberg drilled 15 pars in round one.
Alabama was the top team on par-5 holes on day one with a 4.95 scoring average. The Tide was second best among all teams with a 3.15 scoring average on par-3s.
The second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic begins with a shotgun start tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. on the par-72 Coco Beach Golf Course.
