KISSIMMEE, Fla.- The Alabama women's golf team wrapped up its fall season with a second place finish at the Hooters Match Play Collegiate Championship, falling in the championship match to Duke Tuesday on the Ginn Reunion Golf Course. The Blue Devils defeated the Tide 4-1 with the lone win for the Alabama coming from freshman Brooke Pancake in her first collegiate match play event. Pancake beat Duke's Yu Young Lee 6&4.
Both Kathleen Ekey and Camilla Lennarth were all square through 14 holes, but Lennarth eventually fell on the 17th 2&1 to Kimberly Donavan, while Ekey was eked out on the 18th by Amanda Blumenherst 2&0.
The Tide earned a spot in the final thanks to a victory over rival and sixth-seed Auburn in a tiebreaker, 2-2-1, in round one followed by a win over seventh-seed Denver, 3-1-1. Camilla Lennarth won both of her matchups on the day to help lead the Tide into the championship match.
Prior to match play competition, the 16 teams competed in a 36-hole stroke play tournament to determine seeding in match play. Alabama took third and therefore won the third seed. Senior Kathleen Ekey earned her third top 10 finish of the fall season with a 142 (-2) good for a tie for seventh. Lennarth also finished in the top 10, tying for 10th at 144 (E).
This tournament concludes a successful fall slate for the women's golf team. The Tide finished in the top five in four of five competitions and has been a mainstay in the top 10 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Power Index all season. The team will pick back up in the spring with a trip to Sorrento, Fla. to compete in the UCF Invitational March 8-10.
