TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama men's cross country coach Joe Walker led the No. 5 nationally ranked Crimson Tide through their 12th week of practice and a weekend of no competition. Last week, the squad brought home the SEC title for the first time since 1973.
Alabama took it easy last week in order to get rested up before heading into the NCAA South Region and NCAA Championships. The next two weekends will be tough tests as they will race consecutive 10,000 meter races.
"Having a week off after a tough emotional event like the SEC Championships is good for us," Walker said. "Some of the guys were a little tired and sore coming off that effort."
The team will get a few good workouts in early on this week and then lighten the load of work as they get closer to the weekend. The biggest thing right now is maintaining their fitness level and trying to be as fresh as possible over the next two weekends.
The Crimson Tide is the defending NCAA South Region Champions and will look to repeat for the first time since they won three straight titles from 1999-01. Alabama is currently ranked No. 1 in the region. The meet is being hosted by The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. on Nov. 15.
The men's 10,000 meter race is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
