TULSA, Okla. - No. 57 Mathieu Thibaudeau was stopped short of reaching the singles main draw of the D'Novo/ITA Men's All-American Championships Wednesday. Despite a hard-fought match from Thibaudeau, No. 66 Richard Wire of Stanford emerged victorious taking the match 6-4, 7-6(5).
"Mat played a tough player today, and it came down to a matter of a few points here and there," said assistant coach Bo Hodge. "His opponent just played the bigger points a little bit better. I hope Mat can learn from his match today, so when he is put in that situation again he will prevail."
Thibaudeau and teammate Dan Buikema, who are ranked No. 14, will begin their quest in the main draw of doubles competition Thursday against the No. 2 duo of Wake Forest's Cory Parr and Steven Foreman. Opening serve is slated for 5:30 p.m. (CST).
"Mat and Dan are as good as any doubles team in the country," added Hodge. "If things go their way and they play as a team then I look for them to go deep in the tournament."
