TULSA, Okla. - No. 57 Mathieu Thibaudeau cruised past Nevada's Laurent Garcin 6-3, 6-4 Monday to advance to the second round of the qualifying draw at the D'Novo/ITA Men's All-American Championships held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. With the win, Thibaudeau moves to 2-2 in singles on the fall season.
"Mathieu is playing some good tennis right now," said assistant coach Bo Hodge. "I look for him to build on his win today and use that to help him throughout the tournament."
Thibaudeau will face Juan Gomez of San Diego State Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. (CST).
Also competing in the singles qualifying draw for the Tide was Dan Buikema, who dropped a tough, three-set match to Hawaii's Andreas Weber 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
"Dan had some chances to close out his match in the second set, but he came up a little short," said Hodge. "I'm proud of the way he competed, and I look for him to make a strong showing in doubles."
Buikema will compete in the singles consolation draw Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. (CST) against Kallim Stewart of California.
