
Women's Golf Opens Derby Invitational in Second Place

AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 7 ranked Alabama women's golf team opened the Derby Invitational in second place. Despite battling inclement weather that pushed back the start of the play, Alabama fired a first round score of 294 (+6) at the University Golf Course. Virginia currently paces the field after turning in a 289 (+1).
Alabama headed into the clubhouse leading all seven conference foes. Rival Auburn closely followed the Tide on its own course in third with a team score of 298 (+10). Mississippi, Georgia and South Carolina follow the Tide in the top-10.
Newcomer Brooke Pancake continues her strong play in her first season at the collegiate ranks. Pancake fired a 70 (-2) to finish the first round tied for second overall. The national leader in fairways hit recorded birdies on holes 8-10 and also moved into the red on the par-5-16th.
Junior Helena Blomberg helped Alabama have two golfers in the top-10. Blomberg carded a 73 (+1) to currently rest tied for eighth overall. The Uppsala, Sweden native fired four birdies, including two in a row on holes 7-8.
Sophomore Courtney Harter closely followed with a 74 (+2) to start tied for 13th overall. Harter was nearly flawless on the 7,326-yard course as she recorded pars on 16 holes before getting tripped up on 17 and 18.
Sophomore Camilla Lennarth posted a first round score of 77 (+5) to currently sit in 32nd place. The Stockholm, Sweden native tallied her lone birdie on the par-4-13th. Senior Kathleen Ekey followed with a 78 (+6) to start in 37th place. Ekey also fired her lone birdie on the par-4-13th.
Playing as an individual and getting her first action of the 2008 campaign was senior Laura Goodwin. The Birmingham, Ala. carded an 81 (+9) to finish tied for 60th after the round.
