LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Alabama men's tennis team won a pair of matches before suffering three losses Saturday at the 2008 Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships held at the Boone Tennis Center.
"All three guys dropped close matches today but certainly had opportunities," said head coach Billy Pate. "Capitalizing on momentum is something we can work on as Andrew and Trey really controlled their matches for the most part but couldn't quite put their opponents away. They'll learn from the experience and get better."
Ricky Doverspike and Andrew Felsenthal each won his opening match of the day to surge ahead to the second round of consolation matchups. Doverspike defeated Tennessee Tech's James Crawford 6-1, 6-2, while Felsenthal advanced past Jadir Semensin of Murray State by default. In his second match of the day, Doverspike lost a close set to Vanderbilt's Adam Baker 6-4, 7-6, and Felsenthal got tripped up by Stetson's Njal Stene 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9). Trey Walston dropped his only match of the day to Middle Tennessee's Richard Cowden 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
Alabama returns to the courts next weekend when it hosts its first and only event of the fall in the Crimson Tide Fall Classic.
"We're looking forward to hosting our fall tournament next weekend," added Pate. "We'll have our entire squad compete and play at home for the first time this fall."
