BIRMINGHAM ?? University of Alabama freshman Andrew Kirwa was named the men's cross country freshman of the week for the Southeastern Conference, the league office announced today.
Kirwa, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, finished in second place in his first collegiate race this past weekend at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Invitational. He turned in a time of 15:16 over the 5K course. His second place finish paced the Tide to a third place team finish at the UTC Invitational.
"This is a good feeling. I have not felt like I have ran very well since getting to the United States," Kirwa said. "It has been a big adjustment compared to Kenya, the temperatures and humidity has been a tough change for me."
Kirwa is from the same hometown of Alabama sophomore Emmanuel Bor who was able to earn SEC freshman of the week accolades on consecutive weeks last season. This is the second consecutive year that the first SEC freshman of the week honor was awarded to a Tide runner, with Bor taking the honor in week one last season.
The Tide will compete in their only home event of the season Friday, hosting the annual Crimson Classic at the Harry Pritchett Cross Country Course.
