Tide's Matthew Swan Finishes T-6th At Southern Amateur

PINEHURST, N.C. ?? Three University of Alabama golfers finished among the top 14 Saturday at the 101^st Southern Amateur Championship. The July 18-21 tournament was held at the Country Club of North Carolina at Pinehurst, N.C. Montgomery’s Matthew Swan led the way for the Tide contingent, shooting 1-under par in the final round to finish T-6^th at 9-under par for the tournament. Swan, who will be a junior on the Alabama golf team in the fall, shot 67-71-70-71/279. Mark Harrell, who will be senior this fall, finished T-11 and 7-under for the tournament. The Hazlehurst, Ga., native shot 1-over in the final round. His round scores were 70-69-69-73/281. Michael Thompson, a Tucson native who’ll also be a senior this fall shot 1-under Saturday and was 6-under for the tournament to finish T-14. Thompson Shot 70-73-68-71/282. Alabama’s Gator Todd also qualified for and competed in the Southern Am. The Florence native shot 74-71-74-73/293, shooting 1-over in the final round to finish T-62^nd. Among the three-way tie with Todd was Tuscaloosa’s Patton Kizzire.  Wake Forest golfer Webb Simpson won the Southern Amateur championship. The Raleigh, N.C., native finished the tournament at 16-under par, shooting 70-66-68-68/272 for the win.
