TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama women's tennis team is well-known for its accomplishments in the tennis arena. However, what might be more notable are its accomplishments on the academic scene.
Head coach Jenny Mainz, along with her staff, instills the value of education in each of her players and it is evident in the team's academic success year after year. The team held down the title of highest team GPA for five consecutive years and even though they did not receive the award this year, the team still pulled in a respectable 3.43 cumulative GPA. Even more impressive are the team's five freshmen who each contributed a 3.2 or higher to the squad.
"I'm proud of our women's tennis team for their commendable performance in the classroom this spring," said Mainz. "Their commitment and dedication to their academics was evidenced in the teams' stellar 3. 5 grade point average."
Mainz' program is based on three characteristics: hard work, discipline and determination. The former GTE Academic All-American and Dean's List honoree believes strongly in these characteristics and it is with the same hard work, discipline and determination that her athletes tackle not only each match, but also each academic hurdle.
Freshmen Paulina Bigos, Nicole Briceno, Alice Tunaru and Bianca Svensson made the Dean's List this year. Tunaru and Bigos were also named to the President's List following the fall semester. Melissa Day and Melissa Minor, who are both post-eligibility, also made the Dean's List both semesters. Day, a student-assistant for the squad, also made the President's List.
"One of our team goals for the spring season was to prove ourselves in the academic arena as well as on the court," said Mainz. "I'm pleased that the team achieved their goal."
