TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? Sophomore center fielder Brittany Rogers was one of 11 players named to the 2007 SEC Softball Community Service team in an announcement by the Southeastern Conference office on Tuesday.
"Our seniors and coaching staff really want us all to be involved in the community," said Rogers. "I am not the only one who participated in community service so I think everyone on the team deserves credit because they all volunteer just like I did."
Rogers, a native of Dacula, Ga., has represented the Crimson Tide both on and off the field this season. On the field she is one of the leaders in the SEC in several offensive categories and off the field she has volunteered her time to several programs and spends time after each game signing autographs with her teammates for loyal Tide fans.
She is involved with the Gatorade 60 program at Holt Elementary School, which encourages kids to participate in 60 minutes of activity every day. Earlier this season she volunteered for the Alabama Halloween Extravaganza. She helped set up for the event and played games with kids. Rogers is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. She is an annual reader and volunteer for Red Ribbon Week and Read Across America Day.
"It is wonderful to work with the kids," said Rogers. "It is definitely a fun experience and I want to be a teacher so it was great for me."
Rogers is one of the top offensive threats for Alabama. Leading off the batting order, she is hitting .413 and leads the SEC with 58 runs scored. She has six doubles, two triples and four home runs. She accomplished a great feat this season, hitting both inside and outside the park home runs from both the left and right side of the plate. She has also set the single season stolen base record with 44 on the year.
Former recipients of the SEC Community Service team honor include Rogers' teammate Jordan Praytor (2006), Jennifer Wright (2005) and Angela Johnson (2004).
Rogers and the Crimson Tide will begin the SEC Tournament on Thursday when they face Georgia at 11 a.m. in Auburn.
