TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- After nearly 30 years as head coach of the national powerhouse Alabama gymnastics team, it takes quite a bit to impress Sarah Patterson, but the selfless and giving actions of Crimson Tide fan Courtney Walker certainly did the trick.
Patterson received a letter from Walker in which the Pickens Academy fourth grader enclosed a copy of a picture of she and Patterson together and a note about her plans for a the bicycle that she had won at the same meet at which the picture was taken.
“Courtney wrote to tell me that she was donating the bike she won at one of our meets this season to Relay for Life so that they can raffle it off to raise money for the fight against cancer,” Patterson said. “She is doing it in memory of her grandmother, who lost her battle with cancer.”
Patterson was beyond impressed with the young woman from Carrollton, Ala.
“I was so touched and impressed by what Courtney is doing,” Patterson said. “I always hope that our ladies on the gymnastics team are role models for little girls through out the state of Alabama, but there is no doubt that Courtney is a role model for us all. She is truly a remarkable young lady.”
