The Crimson Tide women’s basketball team had its annual postseason gathering last week with a cookout and awards presentation. Players, coaches, support staff, boosters, administrators and family gathered at head coach Stephany Smith’s residence for the event, where the 2006-07 team awards were announced.
The Tide honored its three captains, outgoing seniors Leah Drury, Kate Mastin and Navonda Moore. The three players, who were named captains prior to the beginning of the season, played a bulk of the minutes in the Alabama back court throughout the season.
Moore finished in the top 15 in career scoring at Alabama after becoming the 21st player in school history to score 1,000 career points. She also finished in the top 10 in steals and free throw attempts.
Drury, a former walk-on, finished her career as one of the hardest working players in school history. She started three games this season and provided depth at several positions for the Tide in her final two seasons.
Mastin, a native of Boaz, was named the team’s Most Valuable Player as well. One of the best shooters in school history, Mastin finished her career in the Tide’s top-10 list in several categories. She ended her playing career ranked fifth in free-throw shooting percentage (78.3 percent), seventh in three-point shooting percentage (35.6 percent), sixth in assists (229) and eighth in three-pointers made (144).
In her senior season, Mastin had the fourth-best free throw shooting percentage in school history, knocking down 88.4 percent, and made 69 treys, the ninth-best total in the UA single-season annals.
Alyson Butler, one of six true freshmen on the Tide roster, earned the team’s Academic award. Butler, a guard who played in 27 of the team’s 30 games, averaging 3.4 points per game, excelled in the classroom in her first academic year. She earned a perfect 4.0 GPA as a freshman.
The team’s Most Improved Award went to another true freshman, forward Tamara Williams. Williams, a native of Alabaster, started the final 21 games for the Tide at the small forward position after playing an average of just six minutes in her first five games. She finished the season averaging 4.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
