TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The No. 15 ranked Alabama men's tennis team grabbed the No. 6 seed in the SEC tournament and will face the No. 11 seed South Carolina Gamecocks Thursday at 8:00 am, the league office announced Sunday.
Alabama (19-6, 7-4 SEC) ended the regular season in a four-way tie for third but because of the tie-breaker formula used by the SEC, the Crimson Tide ended up in sixth place. The other teams tied with Alabama were Florida, Tennessee and LSU. All teams had a 7-4 record.
"Year in and year out the SEC is the best conference in the country and when we have all 12 teams together going after each other it's exciting," said Alabama head coach Billy Pate. "There was a logjam of teams that finished near the top of the conference and that further underscores how tough this league is. It seems like every match comes down to one or two points and I'm sure the tournament will showcase a number of matches that are decided that way."
Alabama faces off against South Carolina in the first match of the tournament and the winner will face No. 3 seed Florida at 8:00 am on Friday. The Tide looks to improve on last year's second-round defeat by top-seeded Georgia.
The second match of the tournament will be the No. 7-seeded Auburn Tigers against the No. 10-seeded Kentucky Wildcats. The winner of that match will play No. 2 seed Ole Miss Friday at 11:00 am.
The third match of the tournament will showcase No. 8 seed Vanderbilt against No. 9 seed Mississippi State. The winner will face the top-seeded Georgia Bulldogs on Friday at 2:00 pm.
The fourth match of the tournament will be the No. 5 seed Tennessee against the No. 12 seed Arkansas. The winner of the match will face No. 4 seed and host LSU Friday at 5:00 pm.
Tournament information will be available through www.lsusports.net and will include live stats, match results and bracket information.
