South Carolina Too Much for Alabama Women?s Tennis

COLUMBIA, S.C.- The University of Alabama women's tennis team faced yet another ranked opponent on the road in No. 32 South Carolina today at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Complex. South Carolina remains undefeated at home, beating the Tide, 7-0.
"The score was not indicative of the closeness of the match," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "It was unfortunate that we could not come up with some of the big points because we had chances. I am proud of the team for coming out and competing as hard as they did, we were just unable to turn the match around."
South Carolina picked up the doubles point after defeating Alabama on courts two and three, however, the Tide's top doubles pair of Andrea Brenes and Mari Muller earned the last point with a victory over No. 18 Gira Schofield and Ana Maria Zubori. The victory marks the tandem's first win over a ranked opponent and their second conference win.
The Gamecocks carried over their intensity to singles with early wins at Nos. 5, 1, 2 and 3. South Carolina's Natasa Vucovick clinched the match with a win over the Tide's Shelley Godwin, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 position.
South Carolina's Christyn Lucas finished the match by defeating Alabama's Alice Tunaru in a super tie-breaker, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5.
Alabama returns to Tuscaloosa for the final three matches of the season, hosting LSU and Arkansas next weekend.
