TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The No. 57 University of Alabama women's tennis team heads on the road to face Ole Miss Friday at 4 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center and Mississippi State Sunday at 1 p.m. at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
This weekend marks the first road trip for the Tide since the team headed to Lubbock, Texas, Jan. 27 in the season opener.
"This team has been working diligently to move forward with each match, said head coach Jenny Mainz. "Though we came up short last weekend, the team gained invaluable match experience and confidence. I am pleased with our progress and expect to continue moving in the right direction. Both Mississippi and Mississippi State compete well and have solid line-ups. We will be primed to go and excited to take the next step in our SEC schedule."
Alabama, 4-5, 0-2 in the SEC, suffered two tough losses in the conference home-opener last weekend to higher ranked teams. The young Alabama squad is led by freshman Nicole Briceno who is 15-7 overall and 6-1 in dual matches from the three and four spots in the lineup.
Ole Miss, 4-7, 0-1 SEC, comes into the match after a difficult 7-0 loss to South Carolina in the opening weekend of conference play. The Rebels are led by senior Ilona Somers who is ranked No. 74 nationally.
Alabama leads the series with Ole Miss 13-5, dating back to the first contest in 1975. Last year the Tide inched by the Rebels in a 4-3 decision.
Mississippi State, 4-5, 0-2 SEC, is coming off a tough opening weekend. The Bulldogs were shut-out 7-0 by South Carolina before forfeiting to Florida due to illness.
The Tide is 27-10 all-time against the Bulldogs since 1976, winning last season 5-2.
Live stats will be made available for both matches.
