Athens, Ga. ?? The Crimson Tide women's golf team improved by one stroke but fell one spot in the team standings in Saturday's second round of the Liz Murphey Intercollegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
"We got off to a really slow start today," said Tide head coach Mic Potter. "But I was proud of the way we fought back down the stretch. We are still right in it, but we need to cut down on our mistakes in order to finish where we want to tomorrow."
Alabama fired a 301 in its second round, knocking one shot off of the 302 the team posted on day one. The Tide, who entered round two in a tie for sixth place, dropped on spot in the 18-team event and are tied with top-10 teams from Georgia and Purdue for the seventh-place slot.
Auburn holds the lead at the event over second-place Arkansas, with Florida, Wake Forest and Virginia joining them in the top five. South Carolina is in sixth place by a single stroke over the Tide, Georgia and Purdue.
Alabama continues to be paced by one of its true freshman, as Swedish native Helena Blomberg led the squad for the second straight day. Blomberg, who fired a 74 in the opening round, shot an even-par 71 in round two for the Tide.
It was the lowest single-round total of her young career and pulled her into the top five among the individuals. She is tied for third place with a 36-hole score of 145 and stands just two shots behind LSU's Melissa Eaton, who leads the individual race after two rounds of play with a 143.
"Helena had a great round today," Potter said. "She kept us in the ball game with the way she played, so I was really happy with how she competed."
Senior Jenny Suh shot a 76 in the second round and joins Blomberg in the top 30. Suh owns a 151 after 36 holes and stands in a tie for 26th place.
Sarah Sturm is in a tie for 33rd place after shooting a 78 in second-round action, while sophomore Laura Goodwin shaved six strokes off of her first-round score by posting a 76 on day two.
Rhea Nair recorded an 84 in her second round and has a 163 after 36 holes.
The Liz Murphey Intercollegiate Classic concludes on Sunday, March 25, with the third and final round of competition. A shotgun start begins at 9:30 a.m. (ET), with live stats available on www.golfstat.com.
