BATON ROUGE, La. ?? Playing in yet another competitive field, the University of Alabama women's golf team is in sixth place after one round of play at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La.
The Tide carded a team round of 301 in the opening 18 holes, just two strokes off of top-five pace and only seven shots behind Vanderbilt, who leads after one round of play after firing a 294. Duke, Tennessee, Auburn and North Carolina round out the top five in the team standings.
Laura Goodwin, a sophomore from Birmingham, had one of her best rounds of the season on the afternoon, firing a 1-over 73. Goodwin is tied for eighth place in the individual standings following that effort.
Senior Jenny Suh, an All-American honoree a season ago, fired a 74 on the day and is tied for 13th place on the leader board. Suh fired four birdies in the round, but had a double bogey on the first hole.
Helena Blomberg and Sarah Sturm, who led the Tide in its last outing at the UCF Challenge, each posted a 77 for the Tide at the LSU/Cleveland Classic. Those scores were good for a tie for 32nd place at the event.
Also competing for UA was true freshman Rhea Nair, who shot an 83.
The Tide is set to tee off for round two of the three-round Classic at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 17. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
