TUSCALOOSA,Ala.- The No. 57 Alabama women's tennis team hosts No. 69 Furman Friday, Feb. 9 at 4:00 p.m. and Iowa Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.
"We are excited about hosting another big women's tennis weekend," stated head coach Jenny Mainz. "There will be some great collegiate tennis this weekend with No. 69 Furman and the Iowa Hawkeyes coming to Tuscaloosa. Both teams are well coached and have strong, reputable programs. We expect to build on our last few weekends of competition and continue to improve. Our progress has been very encouraging and we expect to continue in the right direction."
Last weekend the Tide downed higher ranked Colorado in a 4-3 victory to earn their first win of the season. Both Sofia Ayala and Nicole Briceno received big wins for Alabama, with Ayala jumping out to a quick singles victory, sparking the momentum, and Briceno clinching the match in the third set on a tiebreaker.
Furman comes into the match 1-1 after being shut out by South Carolina last weekend. Alabama is 1-0 against Furman, earning a 7-0 victory in their inaugural match last season.
Alabama also hosts the Iowa Hawkeyes (1-3) and welcomes back coach Daryl Greenan who is all too familiar with Tuscaloosa and Alabama tennis.
"We are thrilled to have Coach Daryl Greenan back in Tuscaloosa," said Mainz. Daryl was an integral part of our strong tradition of excellence while assisting our program for close to four seasons."
Greenan was Mainz's assistant coach from 2001-2004 and helped lead the Tide to three winning seasons and three consecutive NCAA appearances.
The Hawkeyes are coming off two consecutive losses last weekend. Alabama is 1-0 all time against Iowa with their only meeting in 1982.
Live stats will be made available through www.rolltide.com and t-shirts will be given away during both matches.
