The future continues to be bright for the Crimson Tide women’s basketball program. With seven newcomers and six freshmen in the class of 2006 receiving their inauguration to SEC basketball on the court this season, head coach Stephany Smith’s second signing class to the Capstone continues to earn accolades in their final seasons of prep basketball this winter.
In Tennessee, the Tide has two committed players preparing to enroll in UA next fall.
Caitlin Hollifield, from Powell High School, has helped her PHS team earn a No. 1 seed in the upcoming Tennessee high school basketball post-season tournament. She led Powell to the regional semifinals a season ago after a state semifinal appearance as a sophomore.
Joining Hollifield on a No. 1-seeded team in Tennessee is Tierney Jenkins, who led her Wilson Central High School team to the honor. Behind Jenkins, Wilson Central won the Tennessee Class AAA state title a year ago and was in the Sweet 16 in 2005.
Jenkins also earned individual distinction in Tennessee, being named as one of three finalists for the Class AAA Ms. Basketball Award given to the top player in each class at the end of the season.
In Florida, meanwhile, Tide commitment Varisia Raffington has led her Florida High team out of Tallahassee to another state championship appearance. Raffington helped FHS to the Class 3A state title last season, earning MVP honors in the state championship game in the process.
Alabama signed four players in its 2007 class, including Hollifield, Jenkins, Raffington and Daleisha Carn from Jacksonville, Fla.
The Tide is preparing to host its final home contest of the season on Thursday, Feb. 22, when UA welcomes Mississippi State to Coleman Coliseum.
