TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? Brittany Rogers was selected as the Southeastern Conference softball Player of the Week on Monday after leading Alabama to its seventh straight Hampton Inn BAMA BASH! Tournament championship.
"I really appreciate the honor and what it means," said Rogers. "I couldn't be in that position without the support of my teammates and coaches."
Rogers, a sophomore from Dacula, Ga., is the second Crimson Tide player to garner conference weekly honors this season as Charlotte Morgan was named Freshman of the Week last Monday. Rogers was a two-time Freshman of the Week choice last season.
In five games last weekend, Rogers hit .647 (11-of-17) with one double, two home runs, seven RBI and five stolen bases. For her effort she was named the BAMA BASH! Tournament MVP. Her two home runs were both inside-the-park home runs with one coming from the left side of the plate and the other from the right side. She tallied a 1.059 slugging pct. for the weekend.
Rogers went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the first game of the tournament on Friday against Radford. The home run was her first career home run. She followed with a 3-for-3, two run and two stolen base performance later that night against Michigan State. She hit her second home run of the tournament, batting right-handed, against Toledo. She hit it over the center fielder's head and rounded the bases to give her a 2-for-3 outing with three RBI and one run scored. In the semifinal game, she recorded three hits in four at bats with two runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases against Radford. She also had a double and a RBI in the championship game.
Alabama will be back at home this weekend to host the Hampton Inn Crimson Classic. Rogers was named to the Crimson Classic All-Tournament team last season and will hope to lead them to their third tournament championship of 2007 as they host Indiana State, N.C. State, Western Kentucky and Winthrop.
