Women?s Basketball Falls at Auburn, 93-61

AUBURN??Despite 16 points and four 3-pointers from senior Kate Mastin, the Alabama women’s basketball team’s road woes continued Thursday as the Crimson Tide fell to Auburn on the Plains, 93-61.

Alabama got off to a slow start in Thursday’s game, going without a basket until the 14:11 mark and opening the contest just 2-12 from the field and 1-15 from the 3-point line. Auburn (16-7, 3-4 SEC) scored 21 first-half points off Tide turnovers on its way to a 47-23 lead at the break.

“We took a lot of shots early on our offense and then we didn’t get back,” Alabama coach Stephany Smith said, “and we gave them a lot of easy fast break baskets.”

The Alabama offense got on track in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome 26.7 percent first-half shooting and 21 turnovers for the game, which led to 30 Auburn points.

The Tigers outscored Alabama 52-26 in the paint and shot 55 percent for the game. Auburn had four players in double figures, led by DeWanna Bonner, who had 18. Auburn had 12 fast break points and got 34 points off the bench.

“Obviously tonight was very frustrating for us,” Smith said. “It was especially disappointing because we had played well defensively against teams like Tennessee and LSU and then tonight our defense was basically nonexistent.”

Mastin’s 16 points led the Tide. Senior Navonda Moore scored 13 in the game and freshman Talisha Chandler had 10 rebounds.

Alabama (10-13, 0-8 SEC) continues SEC play Sunday at 15th-ranked Vanderbilt (19-4, 5-3 SEC) before returning home to face 14th-ranked Georgia (19-4, 6-2 SEC) Feb. 8. The Vanderbilt game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
