Valecia Tedder, a former member of head coach Stephany Smith’s staff at Middle Tennessee, rejoined Smith at the University of Alabama as the Tide’s Director of Basketball Operations in May of 2007.
Tedder, who owns more than 12 years of coaching experience as an assistant, a head coach and as an administrator, comes to Alabama after a five-year stint as head coach and Senior Woman Administrator at Francis Marion University, a Division II school based in Florence, S.C.
While directing the FMU program, Tedder led the Patriots to the 2005-06 Peach Belt Conference tournament championship game and 56 wins during her tenure. As the SWA at Francis Marion, she also served as an assistant to the athletic director, helping lead fundraising efforts and serving as an advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, among other duties.
Tedder’s head coaching stay was her second stint at FMU. She began her career at the school as an assistant coach in 1995. She helped lead the Patriots to the 1997 Division II NCAA Tournament while also serving as the team’s academic advisor.
Smith hired Tedder to MTSU in 1997, where she helped her lead the Blue Raiders to a 36-22 mark in her two seasons in Murfreesboro. Those teams earned one NCAA bid, in 1998, and a WNIT berth in 1999. Tedder left Middle Tennessee to serve as a coach at Mount Juliet Christian Academy for three seasons before returning to Francis Marion.
A 1995 graduate of UAB with degrees in natural science and math, the former Valecia Buckner lettered four times on Blazer women’s teams that compiled a 90-33 record during her career. She finished her career owning UAB records in career games (122), three-point shooting percentage in a season (42.7 percent) and in a career (36.2 percent).
A native of Newport, Tenn., Tedder is married to Brad Tedder, a former player on the men’s basketball team at Francis Marion. They have two children, Callie (8) and Nathan (5).
