NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Despite a strong second half effort, the Alabama women’s basketball team came up short against Belmont, falling 75-58 on the road Wednesday night. The Tide scored more than 40 points in the second half for the second straight game, but were unable to overcome the large first half lead built up by Belmont.
Freshman guard Daleisha Carn led Alabama in scoring, racking up 18 points on 7-11 shooting from the field in just 26 minutes of action. All of Carn’s points came in the second half. Sophomore Courtney Strauthers added 12 points for the Tide, finishing 5-10 from the floor.
The Tide put together another strong night on the boards, out-rebounding Belmont 40-37 thanks in large part to the efforts of center Talisha Chandler. Chandler pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds, breaking her previous high of 14 that she set in the previous game against Washington State.
Alabama’s defense forced 18 turnovers, including picking up eight steals. Dedrea Magee, Varisia Raffington, and Tamara Williams had two steals each.
The Tide kept things close early, but Belmont used a 16-2 run to take a 33-16 lead into the half. Alabama shot the ball well in the second half, knocking down 50 percent of its field goals, but could not cut into the halftime lead.
For the game, Alabama shot 39 percent from the field, while Belmont shot 46 percent. The loss sends the Tide to 1-5 on the season, with Belmont improving to 3-5.
Amber Rockwell led the way for Belmont, scoring 29 points to go with 5 rebounds. Three other Bruins finished with double-figure points.
Alabama will stay in the state of Tennessee for a battle at Tennessee Tech on Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT.
