TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The Crimson Tide softball program, already ranked highly nationally for its accomplishments on the field, was recently recognized for its hard work in the classroom as well. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) ranked the Tide in the top 50 nationally for its team cumulative grade point average.
“Most fans know about our success on the field, but most don’t realize we have a very good academic team as well,” said UA head coach Patrick Murphy. “Fifteen of the 18 ladies on our team were above a 3.0 GPA for the year, so we were all very happy with the job they did in the classroom.”
Alabama was ranked No. 50 in the academic standings compiled by the NFCA with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.192. St. Bonaventure was at the top of the Division I rankings with a 3.622 average.
The Tide is coming off its 55-10 finish on the diamond in 2007, where it achieved the program’s first No. 1 ranking during the regular season. Alabama won an NCAA Regional for the third time in the last four seasons last May, advancing to the Super Regional before bowing out to Washington to end the season.
Alabama opens its fall portion of the season on Sunday, Oct. 21, in Tuscaloosa. The team will also appear on the Quad to sign autographs and sell season tickets prior to the Alabama-Tennessee football game in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 20.
