LEXINGTON, KY ?? University of Alabama sophomore Emmanuel Bor added another accolade to his stellar career at the Capstone Saturday afternoon winning the Southeastern Conference cross country championship at the University of Kentucky. Alabama also placed three athletes on All-SEC first team today.
"Emmanuel ran a great race today," cross country coach Joe Walker said. "He ran very comfortable and easy and completely controlled this race against some of the best runners in the nation."
Bor, a sophomore from Eldoret, Kenya, has been nothing short of spectacular since arriving at the capstone last fall. As a freshman last season he was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year for the indoor season, SEC indoor champion in the mile, three-time NCAA national qualifier, four time All-SEC and a two time All-Regional selection. He was also honored twice by the SEC as Male Runner of the Week last season.
Bor becomes the first Crimson Tide athlete to win the SEC Cross Country individual title since the late David Kimani won three straight from 2000-2002.
This season Bor has been the Tide's top finisher in every race he has competed in, including at today's SEC Championships, securing him of his fifth All-SEC team selection of his career. He has been honored by the SEC the previous two weeks as the Male Runner of the Week and his time of 23:19 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet is the top 8k time in the SEC this season.
Bor led the Tide to a third place team finish, with his time of 23:50:45 over the 8k course at today's SEC Championships. Behind Bor was junior Abraham Kutingala who finished fourth overall with a time of 24:07, earning First Team All-SEC for the third straight season.
Tide Freshman Andrew Kirwa turned in a seventh place finish at his first SEC cross country championships. His time of 24:15 was the top freshman time at the championships and earned him First Team All-SEC.
Junior Titus Koeh was 17th overall with a time of 24:53 and senior Paul Guevara was fifth for the Tide with a time of 26:09.
Alabama will have a week off before competing at the NCAA south Regional in two weeks.
