
Women?s Golf in the Hunt After Day One

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ?? The Alabama women's golf team is in good position after day one of the three-round Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships at the Cherokee Country Club. The Crimson Tide shot a first round score of 288 (+4) on the par-71, 5,932-yard course to put them in a tie for second place, three shots off the lead.
In the first tournament after winning the Wildcat Fall Invitational and earning its highest ranking (9th) in program history, the Tide put together a solid first round on Friday.
Junior transfer Kathleen Ekey took the top honors on the day. Ekey shot a 3-under 68 to pace the field. Ekey recorded four birdies and 13 pars with only one bogey on the round. The round of 68 is a season best for the Wadsworth, Ohio native.
Senior Sarah Sturm shot even-par (71) to sit in a tie for 9th place after the round. Sturm recorded three birdies, 13 pars and a bogey and a double on the day.
Sophomore Helena Blomberg shot a 1-over 72 to rank tied for 18th after the round. Blomberg sank two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 16th.
Freshmen Camilla Lennarth and Courtney Harter rounded out the Tide golfers. Lennarth shot a 6-over 77 with one birdie while Hartner recorded a 7-over 78 with two birdies. Lennarth and Harter placed tied for 58th and 70th, respectively.
SEC foe Arkansas has the early lead, the Razorbacks shot a 285 (+1). Host Tennessee is tied for second with Alabama with a 288 (+4).
Second round action will begin on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 9 a.m. from the Cherokee Country Club.
