TUSCALOOSA ?? The University of Alabama softball team practiced for the first time since October as they conducted a three-hour session at the Alabama Softball Complex on Sunday.
"We were pretty rusty on defense," said head coach Patrick Murphy. "Too many balls hit gloves or we dropped too many catchable balls defensively. Offensively we need to get the kinks out and work on execution. It showed everybody that we have a long ways to go and not much time to do it. We will work on defense over the next couple of weeks and as we get closer to our first game we will concentrate on offense more. Some positives from today were Allison Moore looked really good in the bullpen. Charlotte Morgan and Kellie Eubanks looked good hitting and Kelley Montalvo looked good defensively."
Alabama posted a perfect 4-0 record in the fall. They were successful at the plate and on the mound, scoring 42 runs and pitching four shutouts.
"We have a couple more weeks before we get back to where we ended up in the fall," said Murphy. "In a way that is a good thing because maybe they wouldn't work as hard if everybody looked like they were at 100-percent."
The Crimson Tide return 15 players from the 2006 squad that claimed the school's first SEC Championship and advanced to the College World Series for the second straight year and fourth time in the past seven seasons. The team finished last season with a 54-11 record and 25-4 mark in SEC play.
Alabama will begin the 2007 season on the round as they compete in the Texas State Tournament Feb. 9-11 in San Marcos, Texas. The first home game will be played the following weekend when they host the BAMA BASH! Feb. 16-18.
