Freshman Leads Men's Cross Country to Season Opening Win
9/8/2006 12:00:00 AM
The Alabama men’s cross country team used a 1-2-3 sweep at the UT-Chattanooga Opener to win its first meet of the 2006 season.
It was freshman Emmanuel Bor at the front of the pack, taking first place with a time of 15 minutes and five seconds over the 5-kilometer course. He was followed by All-SEC sophomores Augustus Maiyo and Abraham Kutingala who finished second and third respectively, posting times of 15:09 and 15:10.
The Tide’s sophomore Titus Koeh was seventh with a time of 15:35 while senior Alex Korir rounded out the Tide’s scoring five with a 16:05, good for 15th place.
Alabama’s 22 points put them 38 ahead of second place Tennessee and 47 ahead of host school Chattanooga. Alabama is coming off a top-25 season in 2005 and returns the core of its Southeastern Conference runner-up squad. If Alabama continues to get such strong performances out of Bor and its veterans, it can look forward to even more success this season.
The Alabama men’s and women’s teams will be back in action next Friday (Sept. 15) at home as hosts of the Crimson Classic, which will be held on the Harry Pritchett Cross Country Course.
