BIRMINGHAM ?? The University of Alabama golf team is aiming for back-to-back tournament championships and is the leader going into Tuesday’s third and final round at the 2006 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
Alabama, which won its season opener a week ago by claiming the Carpet Capital Classic championship, has a nine shot lead against Central Florida at Shoal Creek. Alabama shot 288-288/576 and is at even par going into the final round. The tournament began Monday with the first and second round played.
The Crimson Tide’s Gator Todd shares the individual lead with Florida State’s Matt Savage. Todd shot 68-73/141 and is three under par going into the third round. Three of his teammates join him in the top 10 on the leader board, all among a tie at 10th. The trio includes Thomas Hagler (77-68/145), Matthew Swan (71-74/145) and Mark Harrell (72-73/145). All are one over par on the par 72 course at Shoal Creek in Birmingham. Michael Thompson is among a tie at 58th after shooting 79-76/155.
In the team standings, Alabama leads, followed by Central Florida (585), Florida State and Tennessee (587), Michigan State (589), Auburn and North Carolina State (591), LSU (595), Baylor (596), SMU (597), tournament host UAB (599), Virginia (603), Georgia Southern (604), North Florida (606) and Samford (611).
