TUSCALOOSA ?? Standout women’s golfer Jenny Suh capped off her initial season at the Capstone by earning distinction from the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) when she was named to the All-American first team, the organization announced today.
Suh, who led her Crimson Tide squad to just its second NCAA Championship berth in program history after transferring to UA from Furman last summer, joined 11 other student-athletes on the first team.
“It is obvious that Jenny has more than earned this honor,” Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. “She was one of the most consistent players in the nation all season and played her best golf against the highest competition.”
It marked the third time in as many years in intercollegiate golf that Suh has been honored by the NGCA. At Furman, she earned honorable mention accolades as a true freshman and was on the NGCA second team All-American list as a sophomore.
The Fairfax, Va., native was the leader all season for the Tide, having finished in the top 10 in nine of the 11 events in which she competed. She tallied the lowest score on the team in 10 of those outings and posted a season stroke average of 73.44. That average shattered the previous Alabama single-season best, set by Sarah Johnston, who recorded a 74.53 average in 2001.
Suh joins a group of four other Tide women’s golfers who have earned first team All-American distinction. Peggy Kirsch in 1975, Judi Schneider in 1989, Kathryn Cusick in 1997 and 1998 and Sarah Johnston in 2001 and 2002 are the only other Alabama players to have been so honored.
The NGCA is a non-profit organization representing women’s collegiate golf coaches and represents more than 400 coaches throughout the United States.
Suh, a communications major, will lead a group of three returners from the 2005-06 Alabama team when her senior season begins next fall.
