
Tide Leads After 1st Round of Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO ?? Athens’ native Stewart Whitt shot three under par in Sunday’s first round to help the University of Alabama golf team emerge as the first round leader at the Puerto Rico Classic.
The three day, 54-hole tournament, held at the West Rio Mar Golf Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, began on Sunday and continues through Tuesday. Alabama leads the field of 18 teams on the par 72 course at eight under par, 280.
Three Tide golfers are among the top 10 in the individual standings after one round. Whitt was Alabama’s low round leader Sunday, shooting 69. He’s among a tie for sixth place. Tied with one another at tenth are Matthew Swan and Mark Harrell who both carded 70, two under par. Gator Todd is tied at 22nd after shooting one under, 71, in his opening round. And Puerto Rico native Max Alverio is tied at 76. He opened at seven over par with a 79.
In the team standings, Alabama is first (280), followed by Georgia (281), Florida (284), Arizona State (285), Texas (286), host school Purdue (287), Georgia Tech (288), tied at 8th Northwestern and Oklahoma State (291), at 10th East Tennessee State (292), North Carolina State (293), Clemson (294), Virginia Tech (295), Duke (296), Kent State (302), tied at 16th Illinois and Michigan (305) and, at 18th, Minnesota (314).
Five men share the individual lead after one round. Georgia’s Brendon Todd, Florida’s Brett Stegmaier, Arizona State’s Lenny Park, Oklahoma State’s Pablo Martin and Texas’s Farren Keenan all shot four under, 68, on Sunday.
