The University of Alabama women’s basketball team and leading scorer Navonda Moore search for a pair of milestones on Saturday night when the Crimson Tide plays host to North Dakota State in Coleman Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. for the contest, which will be televised by WVUA and broadcast on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
The Tide seeks its 10th win of the season, a total that would better its nine-win campaign in 2005-06. Alabama, in its second season under head coach Stephany Smith, recorded its first home loss of the 2006-07 season with a 65-54 defeat at the hands of South Dakota State on Thursday night.
Moore, who earned second team All-Southeastern Conference honors last season and preseason second-team accolades earlier this fall, is the Tide’s leading scorer in her senior season, averaging 14.6 points per game. She scored 16 points to lead the Tide in the loss to SDSU on Thursday night and poured in 30 for the second time in her career earlier this month against Tulane.
The Jackson, Miss., native has 995 career points, ranking her 21st in school history in career scoring. With five points against NDSU, Moore would become the 21st player in school history to cross the 1,000-point threshold and the first since Monique Bivins (2001-05) accomplished the feat. Moore is on pace to score over 1,200 points in her career, which would place her close to the top 10 all-time in school history.
North Dakota State, 6-4, comes into the contest riding a four-game win streak. The Bison, who defeated the Tide by 12 in Fargo a season ago, earned a coup in their last outing with a 14-point win over Minnesota at home on Dec. 22. Head coach Amy Ruley, who led NDSU to five Division II titles prior to the Bison’s entrance into the Division I ranks, is in her 28th season at the school and owns 646 career victories.
The game is the Tide’s final non-conference matchup of the season. League play begins on Wednesday, Jan. 3, when UA travels to Knoxville to face the highly-ranked Lady Vols in Thompson-Boling Arena.
