Cross Country Competes in NCAA National Championship Race
Monday, November 20, 2006
Terre Haute, IN- The University of Alabama men’s cross country team had a disappointing finish at the NCAA national championship race Monday afternoon in Terre Haute, IN.
All-Southeastern Conference and All-Region performer Abraham Kutingala pulled a hamstring early in the race and was forced to withdraw leaving the Tide without one of their top finishers.
No. 15 Bama turned in a 31st place finish, 81 points behind No. 10 Florida State. The Tide joined Arkansas and Florida and the only representatives from the SEC in the race. 2006 marks the fifth time in the last seven years Bama has ran in the national championship race.
“We had a great year, but this is a disappointing finish” cross country coach Joe Walker said. “We have to get back here next year and redeem ourselves.”
Alabama was led by sophomore Augustus Maiyo who finished in 38th place with a time of 31:44 over the 10k course, just missing All-American honors.
The young Tide team gained valuable experience today, and will return everyone on the team next season with the exception of senior Alex Seiver.
