Matt Hill
Volunteer Assistant Coach
Matt Hill is a native of Holt, Michigan and is entering his first season with the University of Alabama tennis program as a volunteer assistant coach. Hill is a 2005 graduate of Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan with a degree in Business Marketing with a specialization in Professional Tennis Management. Matt received his USPTA certification this past April.
“It is really an honor to have the chance to coach in the SEC, which is undoubtedly the strongest conference n the country in tennis,” Hill said. “It’s also a privledge to work with such great coaches and people as Billy (Pate) and Lee (Nickell). I couldn’t be more blessed.”
Hill played tennis at Ferris State from 2003-2005 and helped led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Division-II quarterfinals for the first time in school history. However, Hill is thankful just to have had the opportunity to play collegiate tennis. Prior to entering college he was diagnosed with cancer that eventually led to him having to have a full knee replacement. But Hill fought back from the surgery to follow his dreams of competing collegiately.
Outside of his playing career, Hill has worked as a tennis professional since 2000, serving at several different locations. He served as the tennis pro at Michigan State University Racquet Facility from 2000-2003 where he taught a number of nationally and sectionally ranked juniors players. Over the past year Matt moved on to coach the Midwest Zonals Team.
Hill began playing tennis recreationally at the age of four and started playing competitively at age eight.
Hill will put his degree in Tennis Management to use at Alabama as he heads up the Tide’s marketing campaign and aims to reach out to Alabama students and the Tuscaloosa Tennis Community.
