Men?s Tennis Plays in the UVa Fall Invitational

The Tide’s Sammy Struyf won his opening round match in A Singles over American’s Juancarlos Vazquez in straight sets before falling to the tournament’s top seed Doug Stewart in the second round. Stuyf led Stewart 4-0 in the opening set but couldn’t hold on. Struyf did rebound to win twice in the consolation draw and improve his record to 5-3.
“Sammy played well and continued to work and improve,” Pate said. “He just needs to learn to manage his matches a little better emotionally.”
Sophomore Andrew Felsenthal posted a 2-1 record on the weekend. Felsenthal stayed alive in the B consolation draw with a pair of wins Saturday. Felsenthal defeated Marc Boiron in straight sets before fighting his way back from an early deficit against Sebastian Proisy to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-4. Felsenthal was still alive in the consolation draw when the remainder of play was cancelled due to weather.
Billy Mertz advanced deeper than any other Tide player on the weekend as he played his way to the quarterfinals of B singles before losing Saturday morning to Virginia’s Nick Meros. On Friday Mertz defeated Shane Collins easily 6-0, 6-3.
“Overall it was a little disappointing,” Pate said. “I thought we had a few players that could have played better, but we still had some good results.”
