Alabama head men’s tennis coach Billy Pate has announced the signing of Matt Thibaudeau for the 2006 spring season. Thibaudeau will enroll in January and join the team at that time.
Thibaudeau, a six-time Canadian national doubles champion, won both the singles and doubles national championships this summer and was a member of the Quebec Provincial Team that finished second at the Canadian Games. At 6-3, he features a big serve that has been clocked at over 130 mph and, despite his youth, Pate is looking for Thibaudeau to be an immediate contributor this spring as of two freshmen on the team.
“Matt will make a tremendous impact in our program in both singles and doubles,” Pate said. “He has an aggressive style of play and looks to attack at every chance which will allow him to challenge for a starting spot in singles. Because of his vast experience and success in doubles I feel certain he will make huge contributions in doubles right away. Equally important is the fact that Matt is an outstanding person and intense competitor which will blend well with our young squad.”
In addition to his doubles success in Canada, Thibaudeau won the prestigious 16 and under doubles title at the Eddie Herr International Championships in Bradenton, FL.
Thibaudeau is the second addition for Alabama this season and Pate intends to add one more signee to round out the recruiting class.
