Alabama head soccer coach Don Staley has announced the promotion of Katie Barnes to the Crimson Tide’s No. 1 assistant coach position.
Barnes is entering her second season on Staley’s staff at the Capstone. She replaces Teresa Patterson, who accepted a head coaching position at Phillips High School in Orlando, Fla. earlier this month.
“I’m thrilled to be able to elevate Katie to our top assistant position,” Staley said. “She’s done a tremendous job since joining our staff and serves as a great example for our team. Her efforts on and off the field have been a tremendous asset to our program.”
Barnes has a wealth of playing experience, both on the collegiate and professional levels, that makes her a valuable asset to Alabama soccer. Barnes was a three-time All-American during her playing days at West Virginia where she still holds 17 school records and was twice named Big East Offensive Player of the Year. In 2002 she was the ninth overall pick in the WUSA draft and is currently a member of the US National Team Pool.
"Being elevated to the first assistant is quite an honor at such a prestigious school and program,” Barnes said. “It has been an honor to work with Coach Staley and his staff. I am looking forward to this season and to helping this program win a championship.”
Coach Staley’s search for a second assistant coach is ongoing and is expected to be filled in the near future.
