HUNTSVILLE, AL—The 11th ranked Crimson Tide softball team proved to be too strong in all facets of the game for the Belmont Bruins (9-20) as Alabama (41-9) claimed a 6-0 victory at the Metro Kiwanis Softball Sportsplex in Huntsville, Alabama.
Bama struck early on taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Dominique Accetturo (JR, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) two-out single. Jackie Wilkins (SR, Miami, Fla.) led off the game with a double down the left field line. Wilkins advanced to third on a two-out wild pitch and came in to score on Accetturo's bloop single to center.
The Tide added to its lead in the third beginning with a Jordan Praytor (FR, Vancouver, Wash.) bunt single. Praytor advanced to second on the play and came in to score on a one-out single back up the middle from Accetturo pushing Alabama's lead to 2-0.
Bama cushioned its lead in the fifth inning beginning with back-to-back singles by Wilkins and Praytor. Staci Ramsey (JR, Houston, Texas) then doubled to centerfield scoring Wilkins for a 3-0 lead. Accetturo grounded out to second scoring. Emily Currie (SR, Huntsville, Ala.) delivered a two-out single scoring Ramsey and Alabama was on top 5-0.
The Tide continued to keep the pressure applied in the sixth inning. Mandy Burford (SO, Anniston, Ala.) came in to score when Praytor got caught in a run-down between first and second for the final 6-0 margin.
Jennifer Wright (SR, Brentwood, Tenn.) collected her career high 14th win pushing her record to 14-3 on the season. Wright didn't allow a hit through four innings of work while striking out four batters. Chrissy Owens (FR, Miami, Fla.) came on in relief of Wright in the fifth inning and allowed only two hits while striking out seven batters en route to her eighth save of the season.
Bama will get back into conference action this weekend when the Tide hosts SEC West rival Mississippi State.
