TUSCALOOSA — The offense abandoned the 11th ranked Crimson Tide softball team (39-9, 12-5 SEC) as Alabama split a doubleheader with the Ole Miss Rebels (24-15, 4-7) winning the first game 1-0 while dropping the second game 3-0.
The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie through the first four and a half innings in the first game before the Tide scratched the lone run of the game.
With the scored tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Dominique Accetturo (JR, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) drew a lead off walk. Deasy Phillips (SR, Katy, Texas) came on to pinch run and advanced to second on a single by Capper Reed (SR, Guntersville, Ala.). Emily Currie (SR, Huntsville, Ala.) sacrificed both runners up a base. Jordan Praytor (FR, Vancouver, Wash.) then laid down a sacrifice attempt that scored Phillips giving Bama the only run of the game.
Stephanie VanBrakle (JR, Chambersburg, Pa.) collected her career high 19th win of the season pushing her record to 19-4 on the year. VanBrakle allowed only three hits while striking out nine batters in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Chrissy Owens (FR, Miami, Fla.) came on in relief of VanBrakle with two out and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning and got Mandy Ott to ground out to collect her school record sixth save of the season.
Alabama tallied six hits in the second game but was unable to push anybody across dropping a 3-0 decision to the Rebels.
Ole Miss came out swinging scoring two runs on three hits and taking advantage of two Tide errors in the first for a 2-0 lead. It was all the Rebels needed as they handed Alabama its first regular season SEC shutout at home since a 7-0 loss to LSU on April 7, 2002.
Ashley Courtney (SR, Vero Beach, Fla.) did all she could collecting half of Alabama's hits going 3-4 with a double.
Jennifer Wright (SR, Brentwood, Tenn.) took the loss dropping her record to 13-3 on the season. She gave up three runs on six hits through three innings. Owens came on in relief and threw the final four innings allowing only one hit while striking out five batters.
The rubber game of the series will be played on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Fans can follow all the action on http://www.rolltide.com/ with live stats and audio. Fans in the Tuscaloosa area can tune into 90.7 FM WVUA where Chad Anderson will call all the balls and strikes.
