Alabama Finishes T-6th at Augusta State Invitational

AUGUSTA, GA. – Playing the final two rounds on Sunday and completing play at dark, the University of Alabama golf team finished tied for sixth with Notre Dame at the Augusta State Invitational.
The two-day tournament, forced to play two rounds on Sunday after winds blew down trees and made course conditions dangerous on Saturday afternoon, was held at Forest Hills Golf Club. Originally teams were to play the first 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday.
No. 17 ranked Augusta State won its own home tournament, shooting two under par in the final round to win by a stroke against No. 3 ranked Georgia. Augusta State carded rounds of 304-302-290/896 to finish at 32 over par on the par 72 course. Georgia finished second (897), followed by Georgia Southern (911), Minnesota and East Tennessee (922), tied for sixth Alabama (311-313-301/925) and Notre Dame (925), at eighth No. 10 ranked Southern California (927), at ninth South Carolina (931), tied for 10th Central Florida and Duke (934), at 12th Clemson (937), followed by North Carolina (938), Virginia Tech (939), North Florida (941), Wake Forest (954), Toledo (958) and North Carolina State (965).
Nine of the 18 teams in the field are ranked among the Top 25 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America rankings.
Georgia’s Chris Kirk was the tournament’s medalist. He shot two-under par in the final round and posted scores of 72-75-70/217 to finish first at one over par. He finished three strokes ahead of Augusta State’s Scott Jamieson (72-74-74/220).
Two of Alabama’s five golfers finished among a tie for 25th. Thomas Hagler carded rounds of 74-80-79/233 and Mark Harrell shot 81-78-74/233 to both finish tied at 25th. Alabama’s Joseph Sykora finished in a tie at 32nd (81-79-74/234). Clint Provost finished tied at 43rd (77-85-74/236) and Gator Todd finished in a tie at 55th (79-76-83/238).
The tournament marked the final regular season event for the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s golfers will next play at the April 15-17th Southeastern Conference Championships which will be held at Sea Island, Ga.
