DAY TWO RESULTS:
UGA Beats Tennessee to Advance to Saturday’s Semifinal
Fifth-seeded Georgia defeated fourth-seeded Tennessee (18-8, 7-5 SEC) Friday in the quarterfinals of the Women’s SEC Tennis Tournament, 4-1 to advance to Saturday’s semifinal.
This was the second meeting between the two teams in a week. Tennessee won the regular season finale last Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn. 4-3.
Georgia (15-6, 9-4 SEC) put the pressure on the Vols from the beginning by winning the day’s first doubles match. Natalie Frazier and Jitka Schonfeldova then clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with an 8-4 win over Blakeley Griffith and Daron Moore.
“I’m excited,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “We came out and played so much better in doubles today than we did when we played them a week ago.”
In singles, Georgia used solid wins from Shadisha Robinson, Caroline Basu and Kelley Hyndman to clinch the win.
The win advances Georgia to Saturday’s semifinal where they’ll play SEC regular season champion Kentucky. Kentucky won at Georgia in the two teams’ only meeting this season on April 8.

Kentucky Defeats Mississippi State, 4-1, Advances to SEC Semifinals
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Top-seeded Kentucky narrowly claimed the doubles point and collected singles wins from Joelle Schwenk, Aibika Kalsarieva and Danielle Petrisko on its way to a 4-1 win over eighth-seeded Mississippi State Friday in the quarterfinals of the SEC Women's Tennis Tournament at the UA Tennis Complex.
Kentucky's 30th-ranked tandem of sophomores Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk kicked off doubles play with an easy 8-0 win at No. 2 over MSU's Magdi Rekasi and Hayley Rudman. UK's sixth-ranked pair of Sarah Foster and Aibika Kalsarieva held a 4-3 lead at the No. 1 slot, but MSU's Zsuzsanna Fodor and Anastasia Kugakolova seized control of the match, taking five of last six games to win, 8-5. UK's Emily Foster and Lara Maurer held a 7-5 lead at third doubles, but MSU's Tarryn Rudman and Polina Kokoulina pulled even at seven. UK regained the lead at 8-7, but MSU rebounded to force a tiebreaker. The Bulldogs took a 3-1 led in the breaker, but UK captured seven of the final eight points to clinch the match and the doubles point.
Kentucky extended its lead to 2-0 when Schwenk handily defeated MSU's Renee Joseph at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-0. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 2-1 when Kugakolova scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over UK's Sarah Foster at the third singles position. UK's Kalsarieva extended the Wildcat lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over MSU's Fodor at first singles to extend her unbeaten streak to 19 matches. Kentucky's Danielle Petrisko sealed the Wildcat victory, defeating Polina Kokoulina by a 6-2, 6-4 count at the sixth singles position.
UK Coach Mark Guilbeau commended the effort put forth by both teams.
"We had a much better effort in singles than doubles, and a lot of that was due to the high quality of doubles play from Mississippi State," Guilbeau said. "MSU was very impressive, especially after playing an eight-hour match yesterday. If our team is ready to work hard enough on and off the court, we can earn the type of results we're capable of getting."
UK awaits fifth-seeded Georgia in Saturday's semifinals. The Bulldogs scored a convincing 4-1 win over fourth-seeded Tennessee Friday after falling to the Lady Vols last weekend in Knoxville. The Cats captured a 4-1 win over UGA a season ago in the SEC quarterfinals. Kentucky dealt Georgia a 4-3 defeat two weeks ago in Athens.

Vanderbilt Wins 4-2 Over Ole Miss
The fourth-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the Ole Miss Rebels 4-2 Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2005 SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament.
“I think it was a really difficult day to play,” Vanderbilt head coach Geoff McDonald said. “We had to grind it out and win ugly and that’s what we did.”
A day after rain moved matches indoors and forced Ole Miss to play late into the night, the Rebels came out and gave the tournament’s No. 2 seed all it could handle. Ole Miss’ Preethi Subramanian fought off five match-points at No. 6 singles before Caroline Ferrell finally clinched the win for Vanderbilt.
Twenty-ninth-ranked Amanda Fish and Amanda Taylor also won for Vanderbilt and helped push the Commodores to victory.
Despite the loss, Ole Miss’ Chloe Carlotti rebounded after losing to the nation’s seventh ranked player Thursday night to defeat No. 11 Audra Falk in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
Vanderbilt will now play Florida on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s Championship match. Florida defeated Vanderbilt for the 2004 title, 4-0. However, on March 6 Vanderbilt ended Florida’s 33-match SEC winning streak with a 4-3 win in Nashville, Tenn.
“We have had some great matches with Florida,” McDonald said. “It’s going to be a tough day to play but it will be a heck of a match.”

Florida Women's Tennis Advances to SEC Semifinal with Sweep over USC
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The third-seeded and eighth-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team powered through extremely windy conditions during a 4-0 sweep over sixth-seeded and 24th-ranked South Carolina Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
The Gators (16-2) remained perfect all-time in SEC quarterfinal matches, advancing to the semifinals for the 18th consecutive year and will play second-seeded and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (20-4) on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Friday's victory earns Florida a rematch against the Commodores, who handed the Gators a 4-3 loss back on March 11 in Nashville, snapping the Gator's streak of 33 consecutive regular season wins.
Florida began its quarterfinal match winning the doubles point against the Gamecocks (14-8), taking victories on courts No. 1 and 3. The Gator's top team of Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes needed just 37 minutes to post an 8-1 win over Christyn Lucas and Madga Wojdylo. UF then clinched the initial point of the dual match after Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak paired for a hard-fought 8-5 victory against Megan McGavock and Miranda Gutierrez. That clinching match began with a back-to-back breaks, before the Gator duo netted the only other break in the match during the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead and rode that to victory.
The Gators carried the momentum from the doubles point onto the singles courts, jumping out to early leads on all courts winning the first set at all six positions as Suvak, Reyes and Lolita Frangulyan all completed their matches to lift Florida to its 10th consecutive victory.
"I thought we did an excellent job today, especially considering the windy conditions," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "It wasn't beautiful tennis out there today, but we competed well and we kept a lot of balls in play. We played high-percentage tennis and that's all you can ask for on a day like today."
