Today was just like any other day, breakfast with some of the girls on the team at Atlanta Bread Company and a little bit of studying for a test. Then I went to another class, got in a little nap and a bite to eat before I was off to practice – practice is where the fun starts. Today of all days I know this for sure. As I ride my bike to the courts, I am amazed to see the transformation that has taken place at the tennis courts – the facility looks unbelievable: bright flags representing all the SEC schools are waving in the slight breeze, red flowers line the courts, green plants create a border around the entrance and stairways and I feel very lucky and very proud to be a part of this program and the tennis community of Tuscaloosa.
Most of the team is here a little early today as the Tuscaloosa News had a reporter come out to interview Coach Mainz and ask us a couple of questions about our match on Thursday and how much it meant to us to be hosting the event. We are all really excited to be playing at home, it means so much to us be able to look up in the stands and see our families and other friendly faces cheering us on.
After a chat with Chris King, a few quick things from Coach Mainz and a few unsuccessful and unhindered requests for Brenes to untuck her ears from her headband, it was time to hit some tennis balls. Practice went well and everyone finished feeling ready and good about their game. Coach Mainz and head men’s coach Billy Pate teamed up for some “killer doubles” at the end and proved they were a force to be reckoned with. I think Coach Mainz is ready to make a comeback to play on Thursday.
After practice we worked out with Jami Clinton, our strength coach, and then Robin Stephenson pulled out the video camera that’s been with us all semester to get a few interviews. Apparently this time it was for a school project (Fern take note), normally it’s just like real TV with the tennis team.
So that’s another day down, one more to go and then bring on Ole Miss...
