Alabama in 3rd After 1st Round of SEC Golf Championships

SEA ISLAND, GA. – Two freshmen are among the top four and the University of Alabama is in third after one round Friday in the 2005 Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championships. The 54-hole tournament began Friday with the first 18 holes and will continue through Sunday. It is being played at Sea Island Golf Club’s par 70 Seaside Course.
Kentucky leads the field of 12 teams, a field that finds seven teams, including the University of Alabama, ranked among the nation’s Top 25 in the Golf Coaches’ Association of America poll. The Wildcats are at 10 over par after one round, shooting 290. Florida is second at fourteen over par (294), followed by Alabama (295), Auburn (296), South Carolina and Tennessee (both 298), at 7th Georgia (302), Mississippi State (303), Arkansas and LSU (both 305), at 11th Vanderbilt (306) and at 12th Ole Miss (311).
Georgia’s Richard Scott leads the 60 individuals after firing two under par, 68, in his opening round. He’s one stroke ahead of Kentucky’s John Holmes.
Alabama has a pair of true freshmen, Mark Harrell and Gator Todd, who are among a four-way tie for fourth place with Florida’s Matt Every and Tennessee’s Philip Pettitt. That quartet all carded first round totals of 71, one over par.
The Crimson Tide’s other three players include Clint Provost who shot six over, 76, to place him T-32nd. And both Thomas Hagler and Joseph Sykora shot 77 and are among a three-way tie at 38th.
Second round play begins Saturday morning.
