Joseph Jung claimed his 20th and 21st wins of the season Wednesday as the University of Alabama tennis team ended its home schedule in style with a pair of 6-1 wins over in-state opponents.
The Crimson Tide (9-14, 0-10 SEC) defeated Samford in the first match of the doubleheader, and then downed UAB in the nightcap.
“We came out and took care of business today,” Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. “UAB and Samford are good teams and we knew we’d have to play well to win and we did just that.”
Jung won twice Wednesday to become Alabama’s third 20-match winner this season. This marks the first time in Alabama history that the Tide has had three 20-match winners in the same season. Jung handled each of his opponents easily, winning in straight sets in each match and exacted a little revenge on UAB’s Sebastian Falk, who beat Jung during the fall.
“Joe played really well today against a couple of quality opponents,” Pate said. “We’ve moved him up to No. 1 singles and he’s responded well.”
Jung is now 3-0 at No. 1 singles this season.
Three other Alabama players won twice Wednesday: Luigi D’Agord, Billy Mertz, and Eric Molnar. D’Agord had to do with a fight. After dropping the first set against UAB’s Anton Mavrin, D’Agord came back to win the final two sets and the match for his 25th win of the season. Mertz’ two wins came about as easily as any win could come. Mertz breezed through two matches, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Samford’s Brad Weaver and 6-0, 6-0 over UAB’s Johannes Spangenberg.
In the nightcap, Pate adjusted his doubles line-up for what he hoped would translate into a more balanced line-up. The move paid off. Despite losing at No. 1 doubles, Alabama was able to win at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions and jump out to a 1-0 lead in the match. Alabama hung on for the win and Sammy Struyf earned his first career match clinching victory.
The Tide is now 6-0 this season in doubleheaders.
Alabama will now finish the regular season on the road at Auburn this Saturday at 5 p.m. before heading to Athens, Ga. for the SEC Championships next Thursday.
