No. 32 Alabama will begin the final week of the regular season with a mid-week non-conference match Wednesday at 3 p.m. against No. 30 South Alabama.
The match is part of a tripleheader being played at the UA Tennis Complex featuring Alabama’s men’s team at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. and the women’s team at 3 p.m.
Alabama (7-12, 2-8) will look to win for the second time in three matches and for the 19th time in 27 matches against South Alabama. The Tide is coming off a 1-1 weekend in the SEC after defeating Arkansas last Friday and losing to LSU on Sunday.
South Alabama is 15-5 on the season and ranked two spots ahead of Alabama in this week’s ITA rankings. The Cougars have significant wins over Harvard, Arizona and Ole Miss.
“South Alabama has enjoyed a successful season and has several noteworthy wins,” Mainz said. “We certainly have our work cut out for us.”
Alabama and USA have four common opponents in 2005. Alabama is 1-3 with a win over Harvard. USA is 2-2 in those matches.
Wednesday’s match is an important one for both team’s NCAA tournament hopes. For Alabama, it gives the Tide another shot at a quality opponent. Alabama has five wins over nationally ranked opponents this season including two wins against the top 15.
The Tide’s Ashley Bentley will look to protect her perfect record at the UA Tennis Complex. Bentley is 8-1 this spring at home but hasn’t lost outdoors. Along with Robin Stephenson, Alabama is 25-11 at the top two spots in the line-up this season.
After Wednesday Alabama will have just one match remaining. The Tide will host rival Auburn in the regular season finale at home Saturday at 4 p.m.
