The University of Alabama men’s tennis team will host a rare mid-week non-conference match this Wednesday night at the UA Tennis Complex. The match against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
The 60th ranked Crimson Tide (6-8, 0-4) will look to use last weekend’s upset win over North Carolina as a spring board through Wednesday’s match as well as the rest of the Southeastern Conference schedule.
Luigi D’Agord appears to have regained the form he showed early in the season and will enter Wednesday’s match on a two-match winning streak. D’Agord leads the team with 22 wins. Saturday against UNC, D’Agord and doubles partner Eric Molnar defeated the nation’s 14th ranked doubles team of Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy.
Tide freshman Billy Mertz will be gunning for his 20th win of the season Wednesday. Mertz is 19-10 on the season and an impressive 3-1 so far in SEC play.
Southern Miss will bring a 12-4 record to Tuscaloosa, but the Eagles do not have a win this season over a ranked opponent. USM will, however, bring a little first-hand knowledge of the Tide with them. Assistant coach Max Belski played for Alabama from 2000-03 and helped lead the Tide to the Round of 16 in the NCAA tournament during his senior season.
This will be the 22nd meeting between USM and Alabama. The Tide has won 20 of the previous 21 meetings.
