FAYETTEVILLE, ARK --- The Alabama Gymnastics team beat homestanding Arkansas 194.800-193.750 in front of the Ladybacks’ biggest crowd of the year, 4,617.
Freshman Terin Humphrey, making her all-around debut for the Tide, won with a 38.750 followed by a junior Dana Filetti’s 38.675. Humphrey also won the uneven bars with a 9.850. Senior Shannon Hrozek won the vault and the balance beam with a 9.900 and 9.850 respectively. Her beam score tied her season best.
“I thought the scoring was extremely tight tonight, for both teams,” Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson said. “We had some great performances numerous times during the evening and this is a perfect example of when you have to tell your student-athletes to be concerned only with their performance, not their score.
“Shannon’s performance on the vaulting and balance beam equaled her best thus far this season and it was great to see her respond after an average performance last weekend.”
Led by Humphrey’s 9.850, Alabama started the night with a 48.975 on the uneven bars. Sophomore Brittany Comeaux posted a season high 9.825 while junior Mari Bayer chipped in a 9.8. The Ladybacks started the night off with a 48.550 on the vault.
Hrozek’s 9.900 led Alabama to a 49.125 on the vault. Comeaux led off with a 9.8 while Humphrey scored a 9.825. Miles scored a career low 9.825 on the vault with one judge giving her a 9.9 and the other posting a 9.75. Arkansas posted a 48.825 on the uneven bars.
“Brittany Comeaux stepping in on vaulting and uneven bars had her best performances of the year as well,” Patterson said. “And while the scores don’t show it, there were many things that I was pleased with tonight. Ashley Miles’ ankle was a little sore, so we took her off floor and beam and shuffled the lineup around some. I thought our team responded well and garnered some good experience that will hold us in good stead down the road.”
Alabama posted a 48.450 on the floor exercise based led by a 9.750 from Bayer and a 9.725 from junior Dana Filetti. Arkansas had three falls on the balance beam, forcing them to count two falls in their 47.800 total.
“Dana Filetti exceptionally well on floor exercise performed with an ‘E’ level tumbling pass,” Patterson said. “She turned in her best floor performance of the year.”
Led by Hrozek’s 9.850 and Humphrey’s 9.825, Alabama scored a 48.250 on the balance beam. Arkansas finished off their night with a 48.575 on the floor exercise.
“Tonight’s a ‘W’ in the books,” Patterson said. “I thought we performed well enough to help our regional qualifying score, but we’ll have to use next week’s meet to elevate us in the standings.”
Alabama continues west next weekend, facing Stanford in Palo Alto Sunday, March 6. It will be the first time this season that Alabama hasn’t competed on a Friday night.
