The 12th ranked Crimson Tide softball team (11-0) walked away from the Houston Hilton Plaza Cougar Invitational undefeated as their final game of the tournament against Sam Houston St. was cancelled due to rain and travel arrangements.
Scheduled to play at 11:00 a.m., the game preceding Alabama’s was in a lengthy rain delay making it improbable for the Tide to get its game in and still reach the airport for its 3:00 flight out of Houston.
Alabama finished the tournament 4-0 with wins over 12th ranked Oklahoma (2-0), Houston (7-4 and 5-2) and Sam Houston St. (5-2).
The Tide pitching staff carried the team for the second straight weekend posting an ERA of 1.50 while recording 36 strikeouts and issuing only six walks in 28.0 innings.
The Alabama bats finally started to come alive especially in the final game of the tournament as the team recorded four home runs against Houston. The Tide hit six home runs in the four games.
Alabama returns to action next weekend as the team hosts the Crimson Classic. The tournament field includes Maryland, Penn State and Missouri who will be coming in off back-to-back victories over 10th ranked Florida State this weekend.
The Tide will start off on Friday at 4:00 against Maryland followed by a 6:30 match up against Penn State. Alabama and Missouri will square-off on Saturday at 1:30.
